In 2007, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) became a partner in organizing the AEC. The conference was an attempt to give expression to the “African voice”, and the papers, written by renowned specialists in their fields, explore Africa’s growth prospects, with a focus on policies that promote stability and foster long-term growth. Intended for policy makers, researchers and academics, the publication provides valuable insights into various issues of relevance to Africa. Among these are developing the private sector, improving public sector management, developing human capital and building capacity. And of course, high on the agenda are poverty reduction and income distribution, attention to the environment and natural resources, and issues of good governance. I want to thank all in and outside the Bank who made this possible. It is my hope that this book and the knowledge it contains stimulate a debate that enables us, gradually, to close the gap between development research and policy making.
